La Zenia, Cabo Roig and Playa Flamenca sit within ten minutes of most of the homes we manage. The small coves stay quiet all summer while the main beaches fill up by eleven. Arrive before 10am in July and August if you want parking and a sunbed. Cala Cerrada is the only spot on this stretch where you will find surf.
We get asked about beaches more than anything else. Guests land at Alicante, drop their bags, and the first question is always the same. Which one should we go to today?
After years of managing homes along this stretch of coast, we have a fairly strong opinion. Costa Blanca South has roughly sixteen kilometres of coastline and somewhere north of 300 sunny days a year, so the honest answer is that most of them are good. But they are good for different reasons, and picking the wrong one with a toddler in tow, or on a Saturday in August, can turn a nice morning into a long one.
Here is how we actually think about it.
If you only have time for one, make it this one. Wide, Blue Flag, properly equipped with showers, bars and parking, and the sand keeps going long enough that it absorbs a crowd without feeling packed. It is the one we send families to first. The downside is that everybody else gets sent there too, so the car park fills early.
A sandy bay tucked under low cliffs, with the marina right there for lunch afterwards. The cliff walk from Cabo Roig around to La Zenia is one of the genuinely lovely things to do here, maybe twenty five minutes at an easy pace, with the water on your left the whole way. Do it in the early evening.
Two coves joined by a promenade. The water sits calm most days, there are watersports if you want them, and the atmosphere is livelier than Cabo Roig without tipping into chaos. Good middle ground.
Clear water and a mix of sand and rock, plus an elevator down to the beach, which matters more than people expect if you are travelling with someone who finds steps difficult. Worth knowing about.
A long stretch of golden sand next to the marina, carrying both a Blue Flag and a Q quality mark. Watersports available. It feels a touch more polished than its neighbours.
Quieter, finer sand, calm water. The one to pick when you want a beach day without the noise.
These are smaller, harder to park near, and considerably emptier in August. That trade is almost always worth making.
Fifteen minutes north and the character changes.
La Mata is a long beach with a boulevard behind it and the pink salt lagoons just inland. The lakes genuinely are pink, the flamingos genuinely are there, and the walk between the two is a better afternoon than most things you will pay for.
El Cura is Torrevieja's town beach. Busy, Blue Flag, and right in the middle of everything, which is either the appeal or the problem depending on your mood.
Go early in high season. Before 10am in July and August, or accept that you will park a long walk away and take whatever patch of sand is left. By eleven the main beaches are full.
Check the flag before you swim. Green is fine, yellow means take care, red means stay out. The currents here are usually gentle but the wind changes that quickly, and the lifeguards are not being cautious for fun.
Pick a cove on a Saturday. Weekends pull in people from Murcia and Alicante as well as holidaymakers. The small coves barely notice.
Most of the properties in our portfolio are within five to ten minutes of La Zenia, Cabo Roig or Playa Flamenca. That is not an accident. Guests who can walk or make a short drive to a good beach come back, and bookings that come back are what make a property work financially.
