The Cuevas del Rodeo artist studios hold an art market on the first Sunday of the month. The Segura river route is flat and good for walking or cycling. Guardamar beaches are ten to fifteen minutes away. Alicante airport is roughly 35 to 40 minutes.
Rojales is the kind of place people drive through on the way to the beach without realising they have missed something. It sits on the Segura river in the Vega Baja, ten minutes inland, and it has more going on than its size suggests.
The Cuevas del Rodeo are dwellings cut into the rock that have been taken over by artists and turned into studios. On the first Sunday of each month they open up as an art market, with paintings, ceramics and handmade jewellery, and the setting does most of the work. It is small, it is odd, and it is the single most memorable thing in town.
The Puente de Carlos III is an eighteenth century stone bridge in the middle of town, and it is still the thing locals arrange to meet at. Iglesia San Pedro is the church.
Two small museums are worth an hour between them. The Museo Arqueologico covers the area's history, and the Museo de la Huerta covers the farming and irrigation that built this valley. The irrigation one sounds dry and is actually the more interesting of the two, because the whole landscape here makes sense once you understand the water.
El Recorral Park has paths, viewpoints, lakes and enough birdlife to keep anyone with binoculars happy.
The Ruta del Rio Segura is the better walk. Flat, following the river past old mills and irrigation channels, and suitable for cycling too. Go early, before the heat.
Further out, El Hondo Natural Park, the Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja and the Salinas de Santa Pola are all within reach and all have flamingos at the right time of year.
Ten to fifteen minutes gets you to Guardamar del Segura: Playa Centro, Playa Moncayo and the Dunas de Pinet, which have pine forest behind them and therefore shade. A little further are La Mata, Torrevieja and the boat across to Tabarca Island.
La Marquesa Golf in neighbouring Ciudad Quesada is the closest, with La Finca and Las Ramblas both a short drive. Playable right through the winter, which is why golf keeps this area busy in months when the coast empties out.
The weekly market is the real one, with produce rather than souvenirs. If you see arroz con costra on a menu, order it. It is the local rice dish, baked with an egg crust on top, and it is not something you will find at home.
For festivals, Semana Santa and the Moros y Cristianos are the two that take over the town.
Alicante is 35 to 40 minutes. Elche has the palm groves. Guadalest and the Algar waterfalls make one good mountain day together, and Benidorm is there if someone in the group wants it.
You want a car. Alicante airport is 35 to 40 minutes. April to November is the beach half of the year, and the winter months are for walking, golf and long lunches, which is the version a lot of residents prefer.
Rojales and neighbouring Quesada attract people who want space and a pool without coastal pricing, and are content to drive ten minutes to the sand. Rental demand is steadier across the year than on the beachfront because of the golf.
